DTUP|AI + Citizen Science: Reimagining Biodiversity Conservation and Low-Carbon Tourism

23 Mar 2026

On March 23, we had the privilege of welcoming Prof. Ricky Spencer, a conservation scientist, Adjunct Professor at Western Sydney University and founder of the 1 Million Turtles Community Conservation Program, for a guest lecture with our ITS2029 Global Challenges II students.

During the session, Prof. Spencer introduced students to the fascinating intersections of ecology, citizen science, and emerging technologies. He demonstrated how public participation in data collection can meaningfully support ecological research, offering real-world examples from his conservation work. Prof. Spencer also showcased the use of AI tools for tracking turtle sightings 🐢—highlighting both their value for ecological monitoring and the potential environmental implications associated with AI technologies. 🌿

This session broadened students’ understanding of AI-driven conservation efforts, fostering transdisciplinary thinking, and deepened their ecological awareness. 🐢✨
