Guest Lecture by Ms. Venus Kong
Our Programme had the honor of inviting Venus Kong, a commercial radio program host, to share her insights on the development of Taiwanese music and how traditional media, such as radio and television, are adapting to global trends. 🎶🌐
In her engaging lecture, Venus highlighted the cultural differences in the music industry atmosphere between Taiwan and Hong Kong. One of the key points she discussed was the significance of the Golden Melody Awards & Festival—an annual celebration in Taiwan that stands as a highlight for all music lovers.😍 This prestigious event showcases a diverse range of singers and bands from Taiwan and beyond, providing a platform for the wider music community to discover the richness of Taiwan’s pop music. 🎹🎵
Venus emphasized that the Golden Melody Awards not only celebrate Mandarin artists but also actively promote music in other languages, including Taiwanese, Hakka, and indigenous languages.💬 This commitment to diversity enriches the music scene and allows for a broader appreciation of Taiwan’s cultural heritage.👍🏻
She also encouraged the free creation of music in Taiwan, regardless of genre—be it rock, folk, hip-hop, or electronic.👨🏻🎤🤘🏻 This openness allows artists like Flesh Juicer, a Taiwanese heavy metal band, to shine. Their album, ‘GOLDEN TAIZI BRO,’ has garnered several awards, showcasing the diverse talent that Taiwan nurtures. Such opportunities are less commonly seen at the Hong Kong Music Award Festival.🎼🎸
A huge thank you to Venus Kong for enlightening us on these important topics and inspiring us to explore the vibrant world of Taiwanese music! 🙌🏻

Guest Lecture by Dr. Timmy Chen
Our Programme welcomed Dr. Timmy Chen, Assistant Professor in Cultural Studies from Hong Kong Metropolitan University, for an engaging lecture on the revival of Taiwan’s film industry. 🎥✨
Timmy explored the transformations in audience preferences and industry trends, and highlighted how popular Taiwan films can be categorized into three main genres: gangster, little freshness, and horror (comedies). 🗡️🍀👻
One standout series is “Gatao” (South Min for local gang leaders), which has captivated audiences since its release in 2015. 👀This series portrays the gritty realities of territorial conflicts and brotherhood, drawing parallels to Hong Kong’s “Young and Dangerous”. Its authenticity and storytelling have led to remarkable success at the Taiwanese box office. 📈
In the “little freshness” category, films like “You Are the Apple of My Eye”, “Our Times”, and “Till We Meet Again” focus on youthful love stories that resonate not just in Taiwan, but also in Hong Kong and China. 💚💌 We reminisced about beloved theme songs like “The Bygone Years,” “Little Happiness,” and “Red Scarf”, which reminded Timmy of the wonderful times he had in university.⏰
Timmy also delved into Taiwan’s remarkable contributions to the horror genre.💀 Films like “Incantation” and “Detention” which have gained significant acclaim both locally and internationally on Netflix. 👍🏻Additionally, the rise of horror comedies, such as “Dead Talents Society”, showcases Taiwan’s ability to blend genres, providing audiences with a unique mix of scares and laughter.👻😹
