DIFH｜Prof. Vincent Gaffney’s Guest Lecture
DIFH hosted a guest lecture with Prof. Vincent Gaffney from the University of Bradford as the speaker, titled “The Last Great Archaeological Challenge? Exploring the Inundated Landscapes of Doggerland”. 🗺️
In the talk, he elaborately introduced the cutting-edge remote sensing and modelling advancements for Doggerland palaeolandscape research. His words were so thought-provoking that they led to a fantastic Q&A session where professors and students in the audience actively raised their ideas. 💡

DIFH｜Library Workshop
In this special session of DIFH1005 AI and Digital Futures in the Humanities, Mr Tom Siu, Innovation Services Manager (Digital Initiatives and Research Cluster) of the HKBU Library, delivered a workshop to the students. 📚
Tom introduced the technologies available at CollabTech Commons, including Blender, 3D printing, laser engraving, and more. 🤖 These tools are essential for DIFH students to develop their digital humanities coursework and creative projects. At the end of the session, students also raised questions and learnt more about utilising the equipment. 🙋

DIFH｜Trip to BNBU Zhuhai
Trip to BNBU in Zhuhai
To attend the 3rd International Symposium on Humanities and Culture: Strategies and Impact of a Digital Future, 30 DIFH students visited BNBU in Zhuhai on 19–20 March 2026. 🚌
On the first day, HKBU students were given a BNBU campus tour by BNBU peers. They explored facilities spanning traditional Chinese culture, mathematics exhibits, and modern learning spaces. 🏛️
The second day was packed with activities. After the symposium, HKBU students joined a dialogue with BNBU students on numerous topics related to the influence of digital technology on university students. 💻 Students from both schools exchanged ideas intensely in groups and presented their perspectives at the end of the session. 🤝
Finally, students visited Tangjia Old Town, immersing themselves in museum displays, historic architecture, and local shops to deepen their understanding of China’s cultural heritage. 🏯

DIFH｜Academic Advising Evening
DIFH hosted its first Academic Advising Session for the second semester of 2025-26.
In the event, Programme Director Prof. Sammy Li shared exciting updates on DIFH’s development and upcoming activities, while our academic advisors introduced themselves to students. 📣
After the presentations, everyone mingled over light refreshments 🥪, where advisors answered students’ questions and exchanged ideas in a relaxed setting.
A fantastic evening of learning, guidance, and connection! ✨

DIFH｜Lunch Gathering with Prof. Jeffrey Tharsen
Prof. Jeffrey Tharsen from the University of Chicago visited HKBU during the last week of January. Many thanks to CHRP, the DIFH programme was able to join him and Dean Lai of FASS for a lunch gathering on 30 Jan. 🍽️
During the event, Prof. Tharsen held meaningful conversations with DIFH staff and students about digital humanities while enjoying lunch together. After the meal, he continued his discussions with the students and further explored their inquiries. 💬 Therefore, this was a truly valuable opportunity for DIFH students to deepen their understanding of the digital humanities by learning from an external scholar. 🎓

DIFH｜Prof. Simon Mahony’s Guest Lecture
Prof. Simon Mahony from UCL visited HKBU and delivered two inspiring guest lectures on digital humanities to the students of DIFH1005 and WRIT1005, as initiated by DIFH and supported by LAC. 👨🏫 This marked DIFH’s very first two academic guest lectures. 🎉 They were titled “Humanities and Creativity in the Age of AI” (26 Jan) and “Digital Humanities, Classics, and AI: China and the West” (27 Jan) respectively.
The talks encouraged the audience to rethink the relationship between culture and technology in the age of AI. 🤔 They were so thought-provoking that both staff and students responded actively in the Q&A session. 🗣️

DIFH｜Hong Kong Palace Museum Field Trip
The DIFH programme held its very first programme-wide field trip, with the Hong Kong Palace Museum as the destination. 🏛️
Dr. Daisy Yiyou Wang, Deputy Director of the Museum, greeted us on our arrival. She gave us a short yet inspirational speech on experiential learning and social engagement. 🌟
Our trip aims to educate DIFH students about the real-life application of digital technologies in promoting culture and heritage. It also introduced them to Chinese culture and history. 🌏
To facilitate such goals, our students were guided by professors, lecturers, and helpers from the DIFH programme and the Department of History in groups. Prof. Zhao Yi, an expert in Chinese art and religious history from PolyU, was also invited to share his insights. 🖼️

DIFH｜Career Planning Guest Lecture
The DIFH programme hosted its first career planning guest lecture about incorporating technology in business that promotes heritage. We are honoured to have Mr. Paul Chan, the co-founder and CEO of Walk in Hong Kong, as our speaker. We are also grateful that Prof. Daniel Lai, Dean of FASS, gave an opening speech for this event. 🎤
Mr. Chan’s topic was “Reimagining Culture, Storytelling, and Business in the Digital Era: Walk in Hong Kong during Crisis of COVID-19.” He shared how he used technologies to continue operating his cultural tour business during the COVID-19 lockdown. 📱
Mr. Chan’s lecture was followed by a Q&A session. This allowed students to ask him further about his experience and ideas. 💬

DIFH｜Assembly cum Academic Advising
The DIFH programme organised its first Assembly cum Academic Advising in the evening on 26 September 2025. 🌆
At the beginning, Prof. Timothy Wong, the Director of CHRP, and Prof. Sammy Li, the Programme Director of DIFH, recapped the development of the DIFH programme and encouraged our students in their opening speeches. 🎓
Academic Advisors took turns introducing themselves and their expertise as well. They also listened to our students’ sharing about university life and gave advice accordingly, while enjoying dinner together. 🍽️
With such vivid conversations, this gathering had boosted the bonding within the DIFH programme and the intellectual capacity of students. 🤗

DIFH｜Orientation for New Year 1 Students
Our new Year 1 DIFH students embarked on their academic journeys at HKBU in the Orientation on 28 August 2025! 🎉
Programme Director Prof. Sammy Li kicked things off, unveiling the exciting roadmap for their studies and setting the stage for success. 📚 Crucially, he emphasized DIFH's unique strength: empowering students to define their own academic identity and career pathways by diving into our rich ecosystem of digital humanities resources.
Students also met with their academic advisors and shared their aspirations in groups. This opportunity not only provided them with professional feedback on their ideas but also enabled them to discover like-minded peers. 🤝
